Diagnose Equine Twin Pregnancy Early – ImaGo-LC

Save the Breeding Season

Since the adoption of transrectal ultrasonography, the incidence of equine abortion due to twins has reduced and now accounts for 3% of cases. Twinning remains a common cause of economic loss in broodmares (e.g., early embryonic death, dystocia, foal mortality, and retained placenta). Prompt and accurate diagnosis is crucial for successful management.

This article provides an outline of targeted examinations for early ultrasound detection of equine twin pregnancy. Sonorite showcases the ImaGo-LC: the new generation of fertility and pregnancy scanners.

ImaGo-LC’s advanced beamformer technology delivers premium precision for On-the-Go Vets with a reproductive focus:

  • Freeze — Cineloop
  • Automatic follicle sizing
  • Ageing tables

Three Pillars of Pregnancy Ultrasound

Conduct a systematic and complete scan of the uterus for concepti and ovaries for corpora lutea, three times before endometrial cup formation.

1. Pre-Fixation: Day 14-15 post ovulation

Manual reduction to a singleton, using a rectal linear probe, is possible at this stage.

2. Post-Fixation: Day 21-25 gestation

Monitor embryonic growth and viability (heartbeat detectable) of the surviving embryo.

3. Final Check: < Day 30-32 gestation

Maintain a close check on at risk mares (high rates of double ovulation).

  • open and maiden
  • warmbloods and Thoroughbreds
